A Graphic Organiser is usually a one page form with blank areas for the student to fill in ideas and information. Some organisers are very specific while others can be used with many topics. The graphic organiser gives students another way to see information.
Advantages of Graphic Organisers:
- They help students compress a lot of information into a structured, simple to read graphic display.
- They are good for revision and exam preparation for students.
- The brain remembers more when personal creativity has been invested in a project. Graphic organisers complement the way the brain works.

Retrieval Practice is an evidence-based study technique that involves actively recalling information from long-term memory, rather than passively rereading it. By forcing your brain to pull information out of memory, you strengthen the neural pathways, making it easier to remember later. Retrieval practice involves students recalling something that they've learnt in the past (a reasonable time after the topic has been initially taught to them) and bringing it back to their minds. This can be done through methods like answering questions, using flashcards, taking practice tests, or simply trying to write or draw everything you can remember about a topic before checking your notes.

Advantages of Retrieval Practice:
- The act of retrieving information from memory strengthens the connections between related pieces of information, making them more durable.
- When you try to recall information, you quickly see what you know and what you don't, highlighting areas that need more study.
- It's not just about memorising facts; it also helps with higher-order thinking skills like understanding complex information and applying it to new situations.
As part of our School Self-Evaluation (SSE) process, teachers have been implementing Retrieval Practice in classrooms. Your child will already be familiar with these activities, as they have been regularly used during lessons.
