Sports

10-March-18

At Abbey Community College we pride ourselves in our sporting endeavours. The school offers a range of sporting facilities and participates in many different sports and outdoor activities.

Soccer

Our Soccer teams have three different age groups for both boys and girls. Under-14s, made up of first and second years, Under-16s and Senior. Soccer is quite new in the school, and our teams have gone from strength to strength over the last few years, and will only improve in years to come.

Hurling

Hurling is a very popular sport in Abbey Community College, with three teams, Under-14, Junior and Senior. Our Hurling teams have been consistent throughout the years, competing in and reaching the later stages of Leinster competitions in all age groups.

Gaelic Football

Gaelic Football is an important sport in Abbey Community College. Like Hurling and Soccer, there are three age groups that can compete. Gaelic Football is an up-and-coming sport in the school, and is gaining a foothold in the school’s sporting community.

Camogie

The Senior Camogie team reached an All-Ireland semi-final in 2018, a momentous occasion for the school and a sign of even better things to come, given how recently camogie was introduced to the school. Under the watchful eye of Mr. Cahill and Mr. McCormack, camogie has seen a meteoric rise in Abbey Community College, and is undoubtedly the most successful sport offered in the school.

Hockey

Girls Hockey is a stalwart in the sporting community of the school. Overseen by Mr. Kissane, it is a very popular sport amongst the girls in the school.

Athletics

Athletics in this school is offered as an avenue for those who compete outside of school to take part in county and provincial school’s athletics competitions.

Badminton

The Under-16 girls’ badminton team have reached the Leinster School’s final for the second year in a row. This is a great achievement for a relatively new sport in the school.

Swimming

The school swimming team competes in Inter-schools competitions. This is mainly facilitated outside of school hours.

Basketball

Abbey Community College provides three basketball teams for both girls and boys. We compete in Leinster. Basketball is a sport that is gaining great traction among staff and students alike, and will continue to grow over the next few years.
