Student Leadership in Our School

Abbey Community College aims to promote Student Leadership and the Student Voice within our school community. Student Leadership is present in many of the activities and interactions of our students but it is formalised through their participation in the:

  • Student Council
  • Cara Programme

Student Council

Our Student Council is a representative structure for all the students in the school. Its aims are:

  • To support the management and staff in the development of the school
  • To represent the views of the students on matters of general concern to them
  • To enhance communication between students, management, staff and parents
  • To promote an environment conducive to educational and personal development
  • To promote friendship and respect among pupils

Cara Programme

  • The Cara Programme is an initiative whereby carefully selected 5th Year students act as role models and mentors to new students in our school, specifically 1st
  • The title “Cara” means friend in Irish and this reflects the pastoral nature of the peer mentor role.
  • The aim of our Cara Programme is to make the transition from primary school/ another school more enjoyable and less daunting for our new students.
  • Caras are invaluable as they will have experienced the same issues and concerns and can offer support from a young person’s perspective.
  • The Cara Team will work with the Student Voice Co-ordinator, Class Tutors, Year Heads and Senior Management to help new students in Abbey Community College.
