Music/Choir
Abbey Community College has a vibrant Music and Choral department that is integral to the wellbeing and enrichment of our student body. In addition to a large volume of students taking music as an examination subject at both Junior and Senior Cycle, there are also numerous platforms to showcase musical talent during the school year with many internal and extra-curricular musical activities. These include talent shows, choir performances through-out the year, lunch-time performances, Music Therapy group performances, open-air drumming sessions to mention but some of the events.
Over the past decade some of the highlights of the many musical performances and trips have included:
an inaugural joint-concert with the prestigious Howard W. Blake High School String Orchestra, Wind-Band and Choir Ensemble numerous performances by our own Choir and talented Traditional Irish Music Group
student performers singing and dancing ‘as gaeilge’ for our Realtaí na Mainistreach show wonderful Glee Club and Christmas Orchestra performances
inspiring renditions by the Abbey Brass Quartet memorable Talent Shows including staff and Carpool Karaoke performances
music student collaborations with WIT Music Composers for New Music Week a wonderful celebration of choral and instrumental performances for the John Condon Memorial Ceremony
Lyric FM workshop productions of musicals such as Grease and High School Musical
regular Drumming workshops and student performances participation in numerous Teenage Celebration Series concerts and Winterval Choral singing
participation in Choral Competitions superb production of Abbey Road CD by the Music Department which raised over €3,000 for Waterford Hospice
Music trips have included Karaoke-Bus singing trips to music shows at the Board Gais Energy Theatre, National Concert Hall and LC Music Workshops at WIT.
Music is an integral part of Abbey Community College that has organically grown both as part of the curriculum and with many extra-curricular music activities. Music is a key component to providing a holistic approach to education in our school. Continued performances in the Music Department clearly reflect the innate musical talent our students have and their willingness to rehearse and showcase their musical skills. It is wonderful to see this symbiotic relationship continue to evolve heading towards a two-decade anniversary of musical showcases in the Abbey.
